When a recordable injury happens in the workplace, it’s always a good idea to conduct a job hazard assessment on that particular task to ensure appropriate PPE is being worn. In this case, see how this company was able to add a very important piece of protective equipment to help mitigate further recordables – and keep employee morale high.
The problem
A conveyor / heavy equipment company had a recordable injury while an employee was operating the shear press, a process where expanded metal was being handled, which is very sharp on all sides.
Once the safety manager reviewed the hazards encountered by operators while performing this task, they found the need to protect the employee’s chest and abdominal area, as this is the height employees move metal to the table.
The solution
The safety manager updated the JHA (job hazard assessment) and PPE requirement for this task to include the need for a protective apron and set out to find a solution. They tried various aprons of different styles, sizes, and materials.
During this process, operators would complain that some aprons would snag on the metals, pulling the employee towards the sharp edges. Other complaints were that these aprons were heavy, too hot, didn’t fit right, and uncomfortable.
Then they were sent a sample of a HexArmor® apron – and the operators loved how the fit, comfort, and protection they provided.
The result
After each operator began using the HexArmor® apron for a few months, there have been zero complaints – and zero injuries. In addition to buy-in from the operators, the HexArmor® aprons are holding up great throughout long daily use.
"We’ve had zero complaints from the operators, they don’t mind wearing them, and they are holding up great!" – Manager, Manufacturing HSE
