After an incident on the job site involving a foam conduit, see why properly fitting eyewear is imperative when working in utilities.
Worker’s vision was saved in a blink of an eye
A lineman trainee in Eastern PA was given a sample pair of HexArmor® VS250 safety glasses while visiting with his crew on a storm clean-up and repair operation.
During this process, foam conduit is used for tasks while working with electrical boxes, poles, breakers, transformers, etc. Though rare, these foam conduits may explode when in use, and in this case, that is exactly what happened.
This specific situation happened during the cleanup portion of the workday, after the main work was completed. While this worker was picking up leftover trash, tools, etc., the end of a foam conduit tube exploded in his face.
Luckily, the worker was wearing his VS250s. He suffered a small cut under his eye and a corneal abrasion but otherwise had no other issues or injuries. Though the worker was required to see a doctor, this was considered a substantial near miss since the injury was expected to be an amputation of the eyeball due to the severity.
It’s important to note that this worker could have taken the eyewear off if they had been uncomfortable, especially during the cleanup process, as that is often not considered part of the main work for the day.

How to find properly fitting eyewear from HexArmor®
When Wearability® is designed into the frames, workers will keep safety eyewear where it should be, on their face and over their eyes.
Because one size frame does not fit all, it’s important to find safety eyewear that checks all the boxes. Here’s what we recommend:
- Fits close to your face without gaps
- Fits securely on your head without significant
- pressure points
- Stays in place when moving head up and down and side-to-side
- Allows for full, unobstructed peripheral vision
